At Essa Primary, our approach to learning phonics is through our bespoke Essa Precision Phonics which uses the elements of both Letters and Sounds and Read, Write Inc.
Essa Precision Phonics provides us with games and resources to support our teaching of phonics. It aims to build pupils’ speaking and listening skills, as well as prepare pupils to learn to read, by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. It sets out a detailed programme for teaching phonic skills, with the aim of pupils becoming fluent readers.
Throughout Essa Primary, pupils are provided with a range of fiction and non-fiction books which are regularly changed to aid progression with their reading. We use the popular and well- established Pearson and Oxford reading schemes. In addition to this, books from supplementary reading programmes are incorporated to create further enjoyment for reading.
As pupils move through the academy they continue to follow a reading scheme in order that they learn more advanced deduction and inference skills. We use both the Pearson and Oxford reading schemes, which closely linked to the programmes used in KS1. To provide variety, pupils also have access to a range of texts written by popular authors through the academy library.
Our pupils learn through a creative challenge based curriculum which provides them with the skills to research a theme using a variety of non-fiction texts enhanced by the use of technology.
